Breed specific legislation (BSL) and/or breed bans do not deal with problems of aggressive dogs.  In the majority of cases aggression is a learned behavior brought on by improper training, pain, fear or other environmental factors.  Breed specific bans work on the assumption that all dogs of a particular breed or breed type are dangerous. This is not based on any scientific fact and is a fundamentally flawed view.

Banning specified breeds makes politicians feel like they are doing something, but introducing draconian measures such as those suggested recently by Dublin City Council will only achieve the death or abandonment of thousands of innocent family pets.

It is those criminals and irresponsible owners who raise and train dogs to be aggressive that should be targeted.  Instead City councils are engaging in the worst kind of stereotyping by banning and ultimately destroying family pets.

Unless legislation is adopted that deals with the owners who fail to control their dog, regardless of breed, we will never reduce dog attacks. If we, the general public, allow this to continue your dog  could be next.
